The Home on Wednesday rejected a motion calling for Republican Speaker Mike Johnson’s ouster, rebuffing an effort by one of many GOP chief’s most-vocal critics, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
The 359-43 vote on a movement to desk Greene’s measure required the assistance of Democrats, given the speaker’s slender majority. The vote may quiet requires Johnson’s removing amongst conservative hardliners, who have been angry about his assist of a $95 billion overseas help package deal that handed final month.
Johnson’s divided convention was evident on Wednesday as 10 Republicans sided with Greene, whereas 196 opposed her effort. Moreover, 163 Democrats voted to desk Greene’s movement, successfully defending the speaker. Twenty-eight members from each events both didn’t vote or voted current.
The vote comes after Johnson’s predecessor, former Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California, was ousted in October by eight members of his personal caucus. Solely two Republicans voted towards each Johnson and McCarthy: Reps. Andy Biggs and Eli Crane, each of Arizona.
